In addition to these, we feature a series of presentations, selected through a proposal process, to allow peers, colleagues, and geek kindreds to enlighten one another with their expertise and ideas.

Aaron Kuzemchak


Aaron is a multidisciplinary “web-slinger” who spends his days as Senior Web Developer at Fahrenheit Emerging Media in Richmond, Virginia. Aaron has worked at companies of all types and sizes, which has helped him gain valuable experience through a variety of roles and environments. Although he enjoys designing interfaces and occasionally programming with PHP, his specialty is in front-end development, and he loves to utilize tools like jQuery and ExpressionEngine to help him on his journey to make the web a better place.

Alistair MacDonald


Alistair MacDonald, co-founder and head programmer of Boston-based Bocoup, works with Canvas, WebGL, video, audio, and multitouch browser interfaces.

He is one of two technical leads on the Processing.js project, the Audio Incubator Group Chair at the W3C and former JavaScript Visualization Developer at Mozilla Corporation.

Alistair has developed a JavaScript library called Burst Engine for animating SVGs on the HTML5 canvas, and hacks with the Processing.js development team on future browser technology like direct audio stream access and WebGL (3-D hardware support).

Ben Kimmel


Convincing clients that their web sites are more than pretty vessels for information dumping can be surprisingly difficult, but that is what Ben does.

His hardscrabble life consists of working, with clients and developers, to help define a site’s purpose, structure its content and information flow, assess its usability, and all the while allowing for simpler continued maintenance.

CMS focused, but platform agnostic, Ben walks the fluffy line between what visitors want, clients need, and technology can offer.

Bill Ferster


Bill Ferster has been creating technology for over thirty years. He’s founded three successful high-technology companies, won an Emmy for Technical Achievement, and has developed PrimaryAccess, a sophisticated web-based, database-driven tool for K–12 students to create digital documentaries. He is the director of VisualEyes project and is a senior scientist at the University of Virginia with a joint faculty appointment to the Curry School of Education and director of visualization at SHANTI.

Chris DallaVilla


Chris DallaVilla has been helping organizations define and implement innovative digital experiences since 1995. He combines that expertise with focus and passion for telling rich and informative stories, inspiring user engagement and combining creativity and technology to generate visceral, well thought out and ever evolving user experiences.

Previously, Chris worked for over 10 years as the founding principal of an award wining interactive design studio where his clients included an array of some of the nations top museums as well as Atlantic Records, The Discovery Channel, Time Werner and PBS. He has received numerous awards and has appeared in influential media such as Communication Arts, ID, Print and HOW. He is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the American Association of Museums Media and Technology Committee and is a nomination committee member for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Chris is a frequent writer and speaker and has been published by Pearson Education’s New Riders and Peachpit Press. He has lectured at both top business schools and art colleges.

Christopher Schmitt


Christopher is an award-winning web designer who is the founder of Heatvision.com, Inc., a small new media publishing and design firm based in Tallahassee, Florida. He has given talks focusing on the use and benefits of practical standards-based designs. He received a Fine Arts degree from Florida State University and a Master of Communication for Interactive and New Communication Technologies while obtaining a graduate certificate in Project Management at FSU’s College of Communication.

Cordelia Geiken


Cordelia has over fifteen years of experience with web design and implementation. She works at the University of Illinois as an Information Design Specialist, spreading the word about the benefits of usability testing in website design. She received her BA in Cinema Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Curtiss Grymala


Curtiss is the Webmaster at Lord Fairfax Community College in Virginia. In that capacity, he developed the PHP/MySQL content management system being used for the College website and spends much of his professional time developing and improving the features within. He has formally studied PHP and MySQL development, and has nearly 15 years of experience working with HTML and CSS, with intermediate experience using Perl, VBScript and more.

In his spare time, Curtiss posts regularly on the HTMLCenter blog, guest posts occasionally on the CenterNetworks blog, runs multiple hobby websites and runs Ten-321 Enterprises, a small, independent Web development company.

Dave Mulder


Dave is a web developer at Michigan State University (located in East Lansing, Michigan), serving as a strategy and design lead in the campus’s central information technology office. He blends creative research with critical thinking to handcraft clean and powerful user experience. When not helping out at MSU, Dave works with his own clients, connects with other designers, and blogs about healthy eating.

David B. Berman

David Berman

David B. Berman is a strategic consultant with over 25 years of experience in graphic, interface, and accessibility design. He has traveled to twenty countries as an expert speaker, serves as the Ethics Chair for graphic design in Canada, and as a vice president of Icograda, the world body for graphic design.

He is the author of Do Good Design: How Designers Can Change the World. He will deliver the plenary talk at EdUI 2010 and asks all designers to take the “Do Good Pledge.”

David Dahl


David received a Bachelor of Science in Music Composition and Comparative Literature in 2005 and his Masters in Library (MLS) and Information Science (MIS) from Indiana University in 2008. He has worked on many projects including research guides, website design, and database design. Currently he is the Emerging Technologies Librarian at Towson University’s Cook Library and is interested in implementing new technology into the library environment in order to improve reference and instructional services for library patrons.

Denise R. Jacobs


Denise is a writer, speaker, designer, and educator on many things pertaining to the web. She wrote The CSS Detective Guide, and is a coauthor of InterAct with Web Standards: A Holistic Approach to Web Design. Denise is a web solutions consultant in Miami, Florida, helping individuals and businesses increase their web knowledge, and transform their web presences by incorporating web standards, web 2.0 tools, and social media.

Doug Gapinski


Doug is the creative director at mStoner, a company that seeks to provide smart, sustainable communications solutions to the nonprofit community and organizations that serve that community. At mStoner he works with strategists, designers, and writers to brand research, websites, enrollment publications, email, logos, video projects, interviews, and photo shoots. Doug received his BFA in graphic design from Indiana University in 2000 and owned a successful freelance business prior working for mStoner.

Erin White


Erin is a user-oriented web developer, librarian, and a junior faculty member at the Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries in Richmond, Virginia, where she collaborates with the Web Applications team, library users, and colleagues throughout the VCU Libraries to develop, integrate, and maintain a wide variety of web-based applications for the entire VCU Libraries system. She received her BA in Sociology and Publication Management from the University of Georgia and her MS in information science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Greg Rewis

Greg Rewis

Greg Rewis is the Principal Evangelist for Creative Suite Web Premium at Adobe Systems. With over 20 years of computer industry experience, Greg spends in excess of two hundred days on the road each year, talking with customers, giving product demonstrations at trade shows and seminars, and speaking at industry conferences.

Greg has been passionate about the web since putting his first home page online in 1994. His career has taken him around the world, from the early days of desktop publishing, to a start-up in Hamburg, Germany, the glory days of the web at Macromedia, and finally his current role at Adobe.

Jennifer A. Keach


Jennifer is the Director of Digital Services at James Madison University Libraries, where she provides leadership and management for a team of professionals developing the libraries’ websites, supporting staff and public computing, and managing servers. She also provides library instruction and collection development in support of the Media Arts and Design program at JMU. Jennifer is a co-author with Jody Condit Fagan of the recently published Web Project Management for Academic Libraries. She received her BA from James Madison University and her Master of Library Science from the University of Alabama.

Jim Groom


Jim has worked in education for over a decade, and works as an Instructional Technology Specialist and adjunct professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he leads the very successful UMW Blogs project.

Jody Condit Fagan


Jody Condit Fagan, MLS, MA, currently serves as Content Interfaces Coordinator and Associate Professor in Libraries & Educational Technologies at James Madison University. She recently published Web Project Management for Academic Libraries with colleague Jennifer A. Keach, and in 2011 will publish Comic Book Collections for Libraries with Bryan D. Fagan. She is the editor of the Journal of Web Librarianship and her research interests focus on libraries and the web, including usability testing, discovery tools, and web analytics.

Joe Sokohl


Joe has more than fifteen years of experience in user experience-related fields. Most recently, he is the user experience architect and principal of his own company, Regular Joe Consulting LLC, where he provides key consulting to teams that need to deliver products that users want to use. Joe is also a member of the board of directors for the Interaction Design Association. He received his BA in English Literature as well as his Master of Arts Coursework from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Kenneth Warren


Kenneth serves as a technology liaison for humanities faculty at the University of Richmond, where he leads a new media narrative initiative that seeks to amplify existing faculty pedagogy with digital storytelling activities and social web tools. Kenneth received his BFA in Visual Communication from Virginia Commonwealth University and his Master of Education in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia. He is also pursuing an EdD in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia.

Kristin Hondros

Kristin is a writer, filmmaker, and digital media producer who has worked on variety of projects, including independent feature films, documentaries, corporate videos, and commercial productions. She works in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Teaching & Learning Interactive Office as a producer and writer. She received her BA from Colgate University and her MFA from California Institute of the Arts.

Laurel Hechanova


Laurel is an interactive designer at mStoner, transforming the ideas and ideals a website needs to convey into an appealing and easy-to-navigate design. She has completed design suites for the College of William & Mary, Mason School of Business, and Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. Laurel received her BFA in graphic design from Columbia College Chicago.

Melissa Beaver


Melissa is a user-experience guru from the Blacksburg-based New City. She’s traveled a fairly circuitous route to get here. Raised in Luray, VA (that’s LOO-ray for you non-locals), she went to Lynchburg College and then headed off to Bloomington, IN, for nine years. Along the way, she’s studied music and French, and is now finishing her MS in Information, Human Computer Interaction Design. All that time in Bloomington made Melissa nostalgic for the rolling landscape of the Shenandoah Mountains. She must be a glutton for punishment because a perfect day for her involves a run of up to fifty miles. (Not a typo.)

Michael Santoroski


Michael has been Roanoke College’s Director of Web Services for over ten years, specializing in ColdFusion and MS SQL Server interactive web applications. He’s seen four complete website redesigns, including one over top of an existing CMS, and developed Roanoke’s first mobile site over a bowl of cereal. Michael’s interests have included mobile computing and mobile devices for more than a decade, and he’s been dubbed “inspector gadget” by Roanoke’s VP for IT.

Michael Stoner


During his 30-year career as a communicator and consultant, Michael has served more than 200 educational institutions (independent schools, colleges, universities, education associations), nonprofits, and businesses on four continents. He’s provided strategic consulting on developing institution-wide web strategies, led countless website development projects, and has earned an international reputation as a recognized authority on integrating marketing, communications, and technology. Michael has spoken at hundreds of professional conferences (CASE, NACAC, UCDA, and the College Board, for instance) and leads seminars on developing and using new media in institutional marketing and communications. He’s authored chapters for CASE and Open University Press books, and his articles have appeared in CASE Currents, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the College Board’s On Target and The College Board Review, and NACAC’s Journal of College Admission. Outside work, he loves to cook—and eat—and in order to do so, maintains a rigorous exercise schedule.

Nick DeNardis

Nick DeNardis

Nick is associate director of web communications at Wayne State University, hosts the video blog EDU Checkup, where he reviews higher education websites from the point of view of a first-time visitor, while critiquing the design, information architecture, and code of the sites.

He is a staff writer at .eduGuru, a higher education marketing and web development blog and an officer for Refresh Detroit, a group of web professionals whose goal is to promote web standards, usability, accessibility, and to spread the knowledge of web design.

Nick Valentino


Prior to holding his position as manager of new media communications at York University, Nick was a freelance web developer for five years. Before coming to York he built websites and internet tools for organizations in many industries, including sports management, manufacturing, health services, and independent professionals.

Paul Boag


Paul Boag has been working on the web since 1993. He is a user experience consultant for Headscape Ltd, a UK based web design agency that he founded back in 2002.

Paul also produces and hosts the longest running and extremely popular web design podcast at boagworld. He is a regular speaker at conferences and author of the Website Owners Manual.

Paul Dempsey


Paul has worked in higher education web design and development for fifteen years and has made presentations at a number of professional conferences, including CASE District II, HighEdWebDev and EDUCAUSE. He is currently the director of electronic communication at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Paul received his BA in Dramatic Arts from George Washington University and his MA in English from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

Paul Rosen


Paul is a software developer for Performant Software Solutions, LLC. He has been a programmer since the early days of personal computers and has always kept up with the changes and new developments in software technology. His goal is to have computers understand people better rather than the other way around.

Stephanie Sullivan, founder and principal of W3Conversions, has been a web professional since 1999. A sought-after speaker, author, and coding guru, she’s called on to solve especially perplexing problems for high-profile websites. Her true passion is creating impeccable markup and code behind the design, and teaching others how to do the same.

She is a leader in the web industry who inspires others to strive for higher standards in their work. She serves as co-lead of the influential Web Standards Project (WaSP) Adobe Task Force, sits on the International Advisory Board for the Web Developer’s and Designer’s Journal, and is an Adobe Community Expert.

Steve Hayman


Steve is a National Consulting Engineer with Apple’s Education Team based in Toronto, specializing in Apple’s developer tools for the iPhone and Macintosh. Prior to Apple, Steve worked with that other Steve at NeXT Computer, where he first fell in love with the combination of powerful object-oriented development tools and a great Unix core; before that he was Network Manager at Indiana University; before that he picked up a Master of Mathematics degree at Waterloo, and before that he had a summer job painting construction equipment. In his spare time he directs Argonotes, the Toronto Argonauts Band, the finest pep band in the Canadian Football League.

Susan T. Evans


Susan directs Creative Services at William & Mary, and has more than a decade of diverse communications experience in higher education, including strategy and the creative integration of print, web, online tools, and social media. She leads a diverse team of communication and multimedia professionals who offer central marketing support to university departments and offices. Susan began working at William & Mary in 1989, moving from human resources to IT in 1998, and then to the division of strategic initiatives in 2010. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature from James Madison University. Susan completed some graduate coursework at W&M, attended the EDUCAUSE Leadership Institute and regularly speaks at regional and national conferences.
